OSAP 2026 cuts — how much more will you pay?

Up to 85% of your OSAP used to be grant money you never repay. From August 1, 2026 it's capped at 25%, and the rest is loan. Work out your number below.

How this calculator works

  1. We estimate your typical OSAP envelope using the family-income bracket you select. Brackets reflect ranges from the 2025-26 OSAP Aid Estimator. Real OSAP funding depends on dozens of factors (dependants, assets, summer income, single/married status), so this is a starting estimate, not a guaranteed number.
  2. Under the old rule, up to 85% of that envelope could come as non-repayable grants and at least 15% as repayable loans.
  3. Under the Fall 2026 rule, the grant share is capped at 25% and the loan share rises to at least 75%. We apply that shift to each year of your program.
  4. Both percentages are program maximums, not guaranteed shares. Your actual grant portion under either rule depends on the ministry's income assessment, so results here show the change at the maximum grant share. The official estimator is the source of truth for your personal split.
  5. The new loan principal would otherwise have been a grant. We model the extra interest assuming a 10-year repayment horizon at a blended ~6.5% rate (Canada Student Loan federal portion is 0%; Ontario provincial portion floats at ~prime+1% as of April 2026 — the blended rate gives a conservative cost-of-borrowing number).
  6. Total impact = extra loan principal + projected interest over repayment. This is the dollar value you would not have owed under the pre-2026 rules.
