About this award

You can receive a one-time scholarship of $5,000 CAD. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a Canadian student living with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis who balances your personal health with your academic goals. You must apply by June 15, 2026, at 11:59 pm (local time). You will be notified by phone in the summer or fall of 2026. An independent committee of leading gastroenterologists (doctors who specialize in the digestive system), community partners, and patient representatives from across Canada chooses the fifteen (15) students who will receive the award. They base their decision on your 500-word essay and your two letters of recommendation. Once Crohn's and Colitis Canada verifies you are enrolled for the fall 2026 semester, the money is deposited directly into your student account. You can use these funds for tuition, education expenses, required materials, and on-site residency. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Crohn's and Colitis Canada whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You can apply regardless of your age if you meet these requirements: you must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and have been diagnosed with Crohn's or colitis by a health care professional. You must be enrolled in or awaiting acceptance from a Canadian university, college, or trade school for the 2026 fall semester to pursue a diploma, associate, undergraduate, or graduate degree. You should be a student who demonstrates academic aspiration and strives to balance your personal health with your academic goals. Please note that employees of AbbVie or Crohn's and Colitis Canada, their immediate family members, and people who have won this scholarship in the past are not eligible.

Tips for applying

  • EssayAvoid writing a generic academic statement. Instead, focus on the specific questions asked, such as how you maintain wellness and inspire others through your community involvement. Draft your answers to all five required questions before you start the online form.
  • ReferencesAvoid choosing references who only know you casually. Instead, ask a teacher, coach, or health care provider who can speak to your resilience and academic effort. Give your referees plenty of time to write their letters before the June deadline.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that meeting the basic requirements guarantees funding. Instead, remember that this is a competitive process with only fifteen awards available. Treat this as one part of a larger financial plan for your schooling.
