If you are taking a 15-week PSW program, a CompTIA cert, or a college bookkeeping certificate, do not assume no funding exists and pay the whole bill out of pocket. Money exists. Most of it just is not labelled scholarship. If you are between 26 and 66 and file tax returns, you have been accruing Canada Training Credit room at $250 a year, up to $5,000 lifetime; it sits with the CRA until you claim it on eligible tuition, and nobody sends a reminder. If you were laid off in Ontario, Better Jobs Ontario pays up to $28,000 for retraining at a recognized college, up to $35,000 for programs between 1 and 2 years. If you are employed, the Canada Job Grant routes up to $10,000 through your employer for training they approve. Free channels exist too: NPower Canada runs a no-cost 15-week IT program with a Google certificate and job placement built in. The catch across every one of these is sequencing. Better Jobs Ontario will not fund training you already started, and employer grant applications generally have to land before the course does. Check the order before you pay a deposit.
Who this page is for
You are funding a program measured in weeks or months, not years: an IT certification (AWS, CompTIA, Google, Microsoft), a PSW or medical office program, an ECE upgrade, bookkeeping, project management, or exam prep for a professional designation. You might be employed and upskilling, retraining after a layoff, or a newcomer bridging international credentials into Canadian paper.
The four channels
- Tax credits you already own. The Canada Training Credit gives you $250 a year of room from age 26 to 66, capped at $5,000 lifetime, refundable, claimed on your tax return for eligible tuition and fees. If you have never claimed it, your room has been stacking since the program started. Check your latest notice of assessment for the current balance.
- Retraining grants. Better Jobs Ontario is the biggest single one: up to $28,000, up to $35,000 for programs between 1 and 2 years, for people laid off or unemployed 12 weeks or more with household income under the thresholds. Other provinces run their own versions through their employment ministries. The universal rule: written approval before training starts, or the funding is gone for that program.
- Employer money. The Canada Job Grant moves up to $10,000 per person through your employer for approved training. Separately, your employer may have a tuition reimbursement policy; one email to HR tells you whether it does.
- Free programs and niche awards. NPower Canada runs free IT training with job placement, and it accepts permanent residents and people with valid work permits. Professional associations and unions run small member awards. These may not appear on general scholarship lists, so ask your association or union directly.
Sequencing beats searching
You can lose certificate funding by doing things in the wrong order, for example paying a deposit for a course and only then applying for funding. Better Jobs Ontario treats training you already started as an automatic no. Employer grants generally need approval before the start date too. Before you pay anything, check the approval timing on each channel you plan to use. Then register.
