About this award

You can receive one of two scholarships valued at $5,000 each. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a final-year student specializing in oil sands technology development—from mining and reservoirs to tailings and remediation—and your project shows commercial potential. You must apply between August 1 and October 31. No specific notification date is posted publicly, so you should check the Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) program page or call their office to confirm when you will hear back. Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) reviews your transcripts and application to find projects with the highest probability of being commercially deployed within a reasonable time frame. Selection criteria for the number of finalists aren't published, so ask them how many applicants they typically receive to judge your odds. The scholarship is issued after Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) confirms you are enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution. Ask them during your application if the funds are sent directly to you or applied to your tuition so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed because this award targets students in their final year. If you have questions about future funding, confirm with Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) whether this is a one-time award.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident of Canada, or have refugee or protected-person status in Canada. Visa students are not eligible. You must be an Alberta resident, which means one of these must be true: your parent or legal guardian lived in Canada for 12 consecutive months before you started school and lives in Alberta; Alberta is where you lived for 12 consecutive months before starting school; or your spouse or partner is an Alberta resident. You must be attending a post-secondary institution in Alberta and be currently enrolled full-time in your final year of a diploma, undergraduate degree, or graduate level program. Your studies must relate to oil sands technology (such as Natural or Biological Sciences and Engineering) and you must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 grade point scale.

Tips for applying

  • Project SummaryAvoid writing a generic overview of your studies. Instead, focus on the commercial potential of your specific project. Clearly explain how your innovation could be used by a company in the real world.
  • Support LettersAvoid submitting a basic character reference. Instead, get a letter from your supervising professor that speaks to the technical relevance of your work. If a company is sponsoring you, include a letter from them to prove industry interest.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the end of October to gather your documents. Instead, request your official transcripts from your registrar's office early. Remember that photocopies or faxes are not accepted.
  • RealismAvoid assuming a GPA of 3.0 is the only requirement. Instead, recognize that this is a competitive award based on the commercial viability of your research. Ensure your project summary proves why your work is a viable business or technical solution.
