About this award

You can win one of 2 scholarships of $1,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are passionate about Polish culture and language and are using your post-secondary education to deepen that knowledge. You must apply between August 1 and October 31. When you apply, ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) how and when you'll hear back — whether it is by email, phone, or through your online portal. Winners are chosen based on your academic achievement during your previous year of undergraduate post-secondary study at an Alberta institution. Selection criteria aren't published in detail — ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. The scholarship is issued after Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) confirms that you are enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution. Ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, while others apply funds to tuition. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident of Canada, or a Protected Person (someone who has refugee or protected-person status in Canada). Visa students are not eligible. You must also be an Alberta resident. To meet the residency rule, one of these must be true: your parent or legal guardian has lived in Canada for 12 consecutive months immediately before you started school and lives in Alberta; Alberta is the last place you lived for 12 consecutive months immediately before starting school; or your spouse or partner is an Alberta resident. Finally, you must have attended the fall and winter terms in the previous academic year and be currently enrolled full-time in your second or subsequent year in a program that includes the study of Polish heritage or the Polish language at a designated Alberta post-secondary institution.

Tips for applying

  • SupportAvoid using a school-issued email address to set up your account. Instead, use a personal email address so you do not lose access after you graduate. Set up your Alberta.ca Account with 2-Step Verification to keep your data secure.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the end of October to submit. Instead, prepare your official transcript request early since schools can take weeks to process them. Submit your application through the Alberta Student Aid online portal as soon as the window opens on August 1.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed fund since there are only 2 scholarships available. Instead, treat this as a competitive supplement to your other funding. Check your previous year's grades to see how they match the academic achievement criteria.
