About this award

You can win one of two scholarships of $3,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are an Alberta resident pursuing a career in the energy sector and have a strong record of community involvement and leadership. You must apply between August 1 and October 31. No specific notification date is posted publicly — when you apply, ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) how and when you will hear back via email, phone, or the portal. Recipients are selected by Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) based on a combination of your community service, employment, leadership, and academic achievement. Selection criteria aren't published in detail — ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. The award is issued after Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) confirms you are enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution. Ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) during your application if the money is sent directly to your bank account or applied to your tuition so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed, though preference will be given to the previous year's recipient(s) if you maintain a 3.0 GPA (Grade Point Average — a measure of your average grades) out of 4.0 with a minimum course load of three courses per term. Confirm with Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) if there are other requirements to keep the award for a second year.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident of Canada, or have refugee or protected-person status in Canada. Visa students are not eligible. You must be an Alberta resident, which means one of these must be true: your parent or legal guardian lived in Canada for 12 consecutive months before you started school and lives in Alberta; Alberta is the last place you lived for 12 consecutive months before starting school; or your spouse or partner is an Alberta resident. You must have graduated from high school in Alberta and be enrolled full-time in a publicly funded Alberta post-secondary institution in Alberta. You must be in the first or second year of a degree or diploma program in a field of study supporting the energy sector, such as business, communications, sciences, engineering, technical programs, or information technology. Finally, you must have maintained a 3.0 GPA (Grade Point Average) out of 4.

Tips for applying

  • EssayAvoid writing a generic list of your achievements. Instead, tell a specific story about how your community service or leadership roles prepared you for a career in the energy sector. Describe exactly how your chosen degree helps the energy industry.
  • SupportAvoid sending unofficial documents. Instead, ensure your post-secondary transcript has an original official signature or seal from your school. Contact your registrar's office early to request an official copy, as photocopies or faxes are not accepted.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the end of October to submit. Instead, log in to your Alberta Student Aid account early to verify your identity with 2-Step Verification. Use your personal email address rather than your school email to ensure you don't lose access to your account after graduation.
  • RealismAvoid ignoring the GPA requirement. Instead, calculate your current average to ensure you meet the 3.0 out of 4.0 threshold before spending hours on your essay. If you are a returning recipient, double-check that you took at least three courses per term last year.
