You can receive $1,500. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a dedicated science student in Alberta pursuing a career in nursing, social work, or chemical engineering. You must apply between August 1 and October 31. No specific notification date is posted publicly — before you start the application, check Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid)'s program page or call their office to confirm when you will hear back this year. Winners are chosen based on your academic achievement during a full-time course load in the previous fall and winter terms. If there is a tie in grades, preference will be given to applicants in Chemical Engineering. Selection criteria aren't published in detail — ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.
To qualify, you must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident of Canada, or have refugee or protected-person status in Canada. You must also be an Alberta resident. To meet the residency rule, one of these must be true: one parent or legal guardian has lived in Canada for at least 12 consecutive months before you started post-secondary and lives in Alberta; Alberta is the last place you lived for 12 consecutive months before starting post-secondary; or your spouse or partner is an Alberta resident. Finally, you must be currently enrolled full-time in the second or subsequent year of a Bachelor of Science program in Chemical Engineering, Nursing, or Social Work at a post-secondary institution in Alberta.
