About this award

You can receive $10,000 if you are at the Masters Level or $15,000 if you are at the Doctoral Level. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are passionate about researching Canadian human rights, cultural diversity, and multiculturalism to create a positive impact for people in Alberta. You must apply between August 1 and November 30. No specific notification date is posted publicly — when you apply, ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) how and when you will hear back via email, portal, or phone. Winners are selected based on the information in your application form, your post-secondary transcripts, your resume, and your essay. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. The money is sent to you after Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) confirms you are enrolled in graduate studies. Ask them during your application if the funds are sent directly to your bank account or applied to your tuition so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you are counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) whether it is a one-time award or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a Canadian citizen, a Permanent Resident of Canada, or have refugee or protected-person status in Canada. You must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student (either Master's or Doctoral level) at a public post-secondary institution in Alberta. Your program of study must align with the goal of promoting informed thinking about Canadian human rights, cultural diversity, and multiculturalism. Finally, you must plan to conduct research within a Canadian context that will ultimately benefit Albertans. Visa students are not eligible.

Tips for applying

  • EssayAvoid writing a general overview of your topic. Instead, focus on the specific questions you want to explore and how your research creates direct value for Albertans. List up to three clear research questions in your draft.
  • SupportAvoid submitting your essay without external feedback. Instead, consult with your academic adviser to refine your methodology and ensure your research project has a likely impact in Alberta. Schedule a meeting with your professor to review your 1,200-word draft.
  • StrategyAvoid using condensed type or fonts smaller than size 10. Instead, follow the formatting rules strictly by using double spacing and keeping your text to no more than six lines per inch. Set your document margins and line spacing before you start typing.
  • RealismAvoid treating the resume as a formality. Instead, use your CV (curriculum vitae — a detailed professional resume) to show how your experience prepares you to undertake human rights or multicultural work in Canada. Highlight any previous research or community projects you have led.
