About this award

You can receive between $1,000 and $2,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. There are 30 awards for Alberta Junior Football teams, 10 awards for the Friends of Alberta Junior Hockey Society, and 30 awards for the Prairie Baseball Academy. This is for you if you are a competitive junior athlete in Alberta who is balancing your sports commitments with your post-secondary education. The team nomination deadline for submission to Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) is January 15. However, you must contact your team coach for your specific application deadline date. You will need to ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) how and when you will be notified of the result. Your team coach nominates and selects you based on your athletic achievements, community involvement, and academic standing. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Government of Alberta (Alberta Student Aid) whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or have refugee or protected-person status in Canada. You must also be an Alberta resident. To meet the residency requirement, one of these must be true: your parent or legal guardian lived in Canada for 12 consecutive months before you started school and lives in Alberta; Alberta is the last place you lived for 12 consecutive months before starting school; or your spouse or partner lived in Alberta for 12 consecutive months before you started school. You must be currently enrolled as a full-time student for both the fall and winter terms of the current academic year at a post-secondary institution in Alberta. You must be taking at least 60% of a full course load for the term and have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale from your previous term. You must participate in one of these designated teams: an Alberta Junior Hockey or Football team, or the Prairie Baseball Academy. If you are in an upgrading or college preparation program, you may be eligible after completing one term of upgrading. Tips for applying

  • EssayAvoid writing a generic list of your sports trophies. Instead, tell a story about how your extracurricular activities and future goals connect to your growth as a person. Describe one specific goal you plan to achieve in your studies.
  • SupportAvoid submitting a transcript that is outdated. Instead, ensure you provide a current official transcript that shows your most recent GPA. Check with your registrar's office to get the official version quickly.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until January to talk to your coach. Instead, reach out to your coach now to confirm their internal deadline for nominations. Since the coach handles the submission, your relationship with them is the main gateway to this award.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that athletic skill alone guarantees the award. Instead, remember that coaches look at your community involvement and grades alongside your sports performance. Make sure your essay highlights your volunteer work or leadership roles.
