About this award

You can receive a $5,000 award. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. It is available for up to 1 student. This is for you if you are passionate about plant science and landscaping and have a clear vision for your professional future in the green industry. You must apply by January 31, 2027. When you apply, ask Olds College of Agriculture & Technology how and when you'll hear back — whether it is by email, phone, or through a student portal. Olds College will first shortlist the top 3 candidates. From that list, the Section23 Management LP Donations Committee will select the final recipient. Ask Olds College of Agriculture & Technology how they determine who makes the shortlist so you can judge your odds. Ask Olds College of Agriculture & Technology during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Olds College of Agriculture & Technology whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Tips for applying

  • EssayAvoid writing a generic summary of your classes. Instead, paint a vivid picture of the specific impact you want to have on the horticulture industry after you graduate. Describe one specific goal you have for your first three years in the workforce.
  • SupportAvoid submitting your essay without a second pair of eyes. Instead, ask a professor in your program to review your goals for clarity and professional tone. Schedule a brief meeting with a mentor to refine your career vision.
  • StrategyAvoid focusing only on why you need the money. Instead, focus on your vision and goals, as the donor is looking for a candidate with a strong sense of direction. Ensure your essay stays under the 1,000-word limit while remaining detailed.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that being in the program makes you a lock for the award. Instead, remember that only one student will receive the $5,000. Treat the essay as a professional pitch for your future career.
