About this award

You can receive a single award valued at $3,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are an aspiring journalist or media producer in your second year of study who wants to inspire the next generation of storytelling. You must submit your application by January 31. You will hear back if you are selected for an interview, and the final recipient is chosen by March 1, with the award presented in late April. Global News staff will review all letters. They will interview the top three students, and Dawna Friesen will be involved in choosing the final winner. Ask RRC Polytech (Red River College Polytechnic) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with RRC Polytech (Red River College Polytechnic) whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a student currently enrolled in the second year of the Creative Communications program at RRC Polytech (Red River College Polytechnic), specifically within the Journalism or Media Production specializations.

Tips for applying

  • SupportAvoid submitting your letter without a final proofread by a peer or mentor. Instead, ensure your writing is polished and professional, as your letter is the primary tool Global News staff use to judge your communication skills.
  • StrategyAvoid ignoring the influence of the donor. Instead, research the work of Dawna Friesen and the values of Corus Entertainment Inc. to understand the kind of "excellent journalist" they are looking to inspire.
  • RealismAvoid assuming a letter alone guarantees the prize. Instead, prepare for a professional interview, as only the top three students will be shortlisted for a conversation with the Global News Winnipeg staff.
