George Brown International Student Scholarships

What you will need

About this award

Depending on your program, you can receive various amounts. For diploma or degree students, the college lists 14 awards worth $5,000 and 17 worth $1,000 in the Fall, and 6 worth $5,000 and 9 worth $1,000 in the Winter. Certificate students can get one of 32 awards of $2,000 (split as 12 in January, 10 in May, and 10 in September). There are also 18 awards of $1,000 for ESL (English as a Second Language) students, with 9 available in August and 9 in January. Additionally, the Kimokran (Toronto) Scholarship and the Assist-On Scholarship each offer $1,000. As these are scholarships, not loans, you do not have to pay this money back. This is for you if you are an international student who has already started your program and has balanced strong grades with active volunteering or leadership within the college or your local community. Deadlines depend on the award. For diploma/degree and certificate awards, deadlines are September 30th, January 31st, and May 31st (for certificates only). ESL students apply by August 31st or January 31st. The Kimokran and Assist-On scholarships are due January 22nd. You will be notified by email if you win; only successful applicants are contacted. A committee created by George Brown College, including representatives from academic divisions, selects the winners. Selection criteria aren't published in detail, so ask George Brown College how they weigh GPA versus community involvement to help you judge your odds. Ask George Brown College during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed, but note that if you win one scholarship or bursary, you cannot apply for a second one. If you are counting on this for multiple years, confirm with George Brown College whether these are one-time or renewable.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be an international student with a valid Study Permit. For diploma or degree students, you must be in a full-time 2, 3 or 4-year program, have completed at least two consecutive semesters, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5. For certificate or post-graduate certificate students (2 or 3 semesters), you must have completed at least one semester with a minimum GPA of 3.5. For the Kimokran (Toronto) and Assist-On scholarships, you need a minimum GPA of 3.3 and at least two full semesters of study (for Kimokran). ESL students must be in a full-time English for Academic Purposes program and have completed at least one level with a grade A average. All applicants must show they have contributed to other students, their department, or the college community and must not have won a previous scholarship through the George Brown Polytechnic International Centre.

• Community ContributionAvoid just listing the names of clubs you joined. Instead, describe the specific impact your actions had on other students or the campus. List the start and end dates, the organization name, and your weekly hours.
• SupportAvoid submitting a generic character reference. Instead, ask a George Brown College staff member to write a letter that specifically confirms your contributions to the college community.
• StrategyAvoid applying for multiple internal awards if you have already won one. Since winning once makes you ineligible for future scholarships or bursaries from the International Centre, focus your energy on the one award that best matches your GPA and program level.
• RealismAvoid assuming a 3.5 GPA is enough to win. Because these awards also require documented community involvement and are decided by a committee, ensure your cover letter proves your leadership skills alongside your transcripts.
