About this award

You can receive one of several scholarships valued at $4,000 each. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are an outstanding student entering your first year of study who is interested in technological innovation and committed to the highest standards of excellence. There is no separate application: you are considered automatically when you apply for admission to Computer Science, Software Engineering or Computer Engineering, using your admission grades and your Admission Information Form. Winners are chosen based on your high school admission grades, extracurricular achievements, and specific tests. For Mathematics students, they look at results from contests run by the CEMC (the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing — an organization that runs math competitions). For Engineering students, they use an online video interview. Selection criteria aren't published in full — ask University of Waterloo how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Waterloo's Student Awards & Financial Aid office (safainfo@uwaterloo.ca) how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with University of Waterloo whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Tips for applying

  • InterviewAvoid focusing only on your technical skills during the video interview. Instead, show your passion for technological innovation and how you solve problems. Practice explaining a complex project in simple terms before you record.
  • StrategyAvoid ignoring the CEMC (the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing) contests if you are a Math student. Instead, register for these competitions early to give the admissions team more data on your abilities. Check the CEMC website for upcoming contest dates.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that high grades alone will win you this award. Instead, remember that the school looks at a combination of grades, interviews, and contests. Focus on strengthening your profile in all three areas to improve your chances.
