About this award

Funding varies by your degree level. Domestic and international applicants may be offered a teaching assistantship valued at approximately $12,700.00/year for up to 2 years in an M.Sc. (Master of Science) or up to 5 years in a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy). Domestic applicants may also be offered a graduate scholarship of $2,000 – $10,000 for 1 year for M.Sc. students, or $5,000 – $15,000 for up to 4 years for Ph.D. students. International Ph.D. students can access International Doctoral Tuition Support, which reduces your tuition to the domestic level for up to 5 years. As these are scholarships and assistantships, they are not loans and you do not have to pay them back. This funding is for you if you are a high-achieving student pursuing advanced degrees in economics, particularly those focusing on quantitative work, public economics, or international affairs. For the OGS (Ontario Graduate Scholarship — a merit-based provincial award), you must apply between August 15 and November 15. Other donor-funded awards are handled internally. No universal deadline is posted publicly for all internal awards — before you start your application, check Carleton University Department of Economics's program page or call their office to confirm when applications open and close this year. Winners are chosen through different paths. Some are decided by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs based on recommendations from the Chair of the Department of Economics. Others are nominated by the economics department awards committee based on academic merit, financial need, or specific research areas. Selection criteria aren't published for every award — ask Carleton University Department of Economics how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Carleton University Department of Economics during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed for most of these awards — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Carleton University Department of Economics whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify for general admissions funding, you must be accepted into an M.Sc. or Ph.D. program. For the John McManus Memorial Bursary and the Bijit Bora Graduate Prize, you must be a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident of Canada (including landed immigrants or those with refugee or protected-person status in Canada) and you must meet the OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program — the provincial financial aid office) Ontario residency requirement. You must also demonstrate financial need for these two awards. Specific donor awards have tighter scopes: the Randall Geehan Memorial Scholarship is for fourth-year Honours or graduate students emphasizing quantitative work; the Eddie West Memorial Scholarship is for those studying the role of the state in economic activity; the W. Irwin Gillespie Grad Scholarship is for Ph.D. students (with a preference for public economics focus); and the H. Edward English Memorial Scholarship is for those studying development or international affairs in Economics or the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs.

Tips for applying

  • Research StatementAvoid writing a generic goal statement. Instead, tailor your research interests to match the specific focus of the donor award, such as public economics or international affairs. Mention specific themes from the award's history in your proposal.
  • SupportAvoid submitting references that only speak to your grades. Instead, ask a professor who knows your quantitative skills or research potential to write your letter. Ensure they highlight your ability to handle the specific rigors of a graduate economics program.
  • StrategyAvoid applying for only one funding source. Instead, look at the mix of teaching assistantships, internal donor awards, and external grants like the OGS (Ontario Graduate Scholarship). Apply to every category you qualify for to maximize your total package.
  • RealismAvoid assuming a teaching assistantship covers every year of your degree. Instead, confirm the exact duration of the offer—such as the 2-year limit for M.Sc. or 5-year limit for Ph.D.—so you can plan your finances for the later years of your degree.
