About this award

You can receive $5,000 in total, which is paid in two installments: $2,500 in term 1 and $2,500 in term 2. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep and there is nothing to repay. This is for you if you are an Indigenous student who has lived in Saskatchewan for the last year and needs financial support to continue your undergraduate education. You must apply by October 1. You will hear back from the university by early February. Winners are chosen based on their financial need and academic achievement. Selection criteria aren't published in detail, so ask University of Saskatchewan (donor: Crown Investment Corporation of Saskatchewan) how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask University of Saskatchewan (donor: Crown Investment Corporation of Saskatchewan) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To receive the second payout of $2,500 in term 2, you must continue to meet the eligibility criteria, including your credit load and grade average. Confirm with University of Saskatchewan (donor: Crown Investment Corporation of Saskatchewan) if you need to re-apply each year or if the award is automatically renewed.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must provide proof of Indigenous ancestry through the PAWS (Password Access Web Service — the university's secure internal portal) Indigenous Membership/Citizenship Verification channel. You must have been a Saskatchewan resident for at least the past 12 months, be registered in at least 9 credit units per semester, demonstrate financial need, and have an average of 65% or greater. A preference may be given to students in the Colleges of Arts and Science, Edwards School of Business, and Engineering.

Tips for applying

  • Financial NeedAvoid providing vague statements about your budget. Instead, give a clear breakdown of your expenses and why the $5,000 would make a difference in your ability to stay in school. List your monthly costs and any gaps in your current funding.
  • StrategyAvoid ignoring the preference categories if you fit them. Instead, clearly state if you are enrolled in the College of Arts and Science, the Edwards School of Business, or Engineering. Mention your specific program in your application to highlight this match.
  • RealismAvoid assuming the full $5,000 is guaranteed immediately. Instead, remember that the second $2,500 payment depends on you maintaining your 9-unit credit load and 65% average. Plan your second-term budget with the understanding that you must meet these bars again.
