About this award

You can receive a $500 bursary and a certificate of recognition. There are up to twelve (12) of these awards available for students in bachelor of education programs and up to five (5) for those in early childhood education programs. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. This is for you if you are the child of an active member of the ETFO (Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario — the union representing elementary school teachers). You must apply between January and April 30 each year. No specific notification date is posted publicly — when you apply, ask how and when you'll hear back via email, portal, or phone. Selection criteria aren't published — ask the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

How to apply

  1. Read the award's official page

Check you meet every requirement, and note each document they ask for.

  2. Deadline: April 30

April 30 has already passed this year. The award's official page gives the date without a year, so check there when the next round closes before you prepare anything.

Tips for applying

  • ApplicationAvoid submitting a generic request. Instead, focus your application on your specific goals for becoming an educator. Mention why you chose your specific program in Ontario.
  • SupportYour parent must be an active ETFO member, so confirm their membership status with them before you apply.
  • RealismAvoid counting on this award alone. With only 12 spots for bachelor of education and 5 for early childhood education, treat this as a helpful supplement rather than your primary funding source.
