About this award

You can receive a grant of $2,000. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are an Indigenous student who is making a difference in eliminating the barriers of racism, sexism, violence, and indifference in society, including those impacted by the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (Women, Girls, Men, Boys, and 2SLGBTQQIA+) genocide and/or Survivors of Gender-Based Violence. You must apply by 11:59PM CST on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Only those selected for the award will be contacted in 2026; if you do not hear back, you were likely not selected. An independent adjudication panel chooses the winners. This panel includes representatives from the NCTR (the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation — the organization that documents the history and legacy of Canada's residential schools) and the ICC (the Indigenous Chamber of Commerce — an organization that supports Indigenous businesses). Ask National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, Indigenous Chamber of Commerce and The Winnipeg Foundation how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, Indigenous Chamber of Commerce and The Winnipeg Foundation during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, Indigenous Chamber of Commerce and The Winnipeg Foundation whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

  • ImpactAvoid writing a generic list of your activities. Instead, describe the specific ways you are helping to remove barriers like racism and sexism in your community. Give one concrete example of a time you stood up to indifference.
  • SupportAvoid using references that only speak to your grades. Instead, ask a mentor or community leader to write about your commitment to social justice and your efforts to support other Indigenous people.
  • StrategyAvoid focusing only on your personal struggle. Instead, connect your experiences to the legacy of Helen Betty Osborne and explain how your current studies will help you uplift your community in the future.
