About this award

You can receive a one-time bursary valued at $5,000. There are four bursaries available in total, with two successful applicants chosen in each category (parent and sibling). As a bursary, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. This is for you if you are a parent or sibling of a child (age 18 or younger) who has been or is currently diagnosed with a form of childhood cancer at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. It is designed to help you take back control of your future by supporting your educational journey. You must email your completed application to scholarships@helpingfamilies.ca by April 19, 2026. You will be notified about the status of your application by May 15, 2026. The Helping Families Handle Cancer Selection Committee reviews all complete applications to create a shortlist. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to an online interview on May 19 or May 20, 2026, to determine the final recipients. The $5,000 will be sent to you as a cheque made out directly to you, not to your school, before the fall term begins. Note that if you do not attend the post-secondary institution you indicated, you must return all bursary money to Helping Families Handle Cancer. Renewal conditions aren't listed — since this is a one-time bursary, confirm with Helping Families Handle Cancer if there are any other opportunities for future funding.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or landed immigrant and be registered in an accredited postsecondary institution (such as a university, college, or trade and vocational school) for the 2026-2027 academic year. Both full-time and part-time students are eligible. You cannot be a current employee or Board member of the Helping Families Handle Cancer Foundation, nor a relative of one. For the Parent Bursary: You must be 18 years of age or older and the parent or legal guardian of at least one child (age 18 or younger) who has been treated, is in treatment, or is receiving follow-up care for childhood cancer at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. For the Sibling Bursary: You must be 25 years of age or younger and the sibling of at least one child (age 18 or younger) who has been treated, is in treatment, or is receiving follow-up care for childhood cancer at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
