Get $5,000 for any post-secondary program if you are a Canadian with an inherited bleeding disorder.

You can receive a $5,000 award to attend any post-secondary institution of your choice. This is a scholarship or bursary, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a Canadian living with an inherited bleeding disorder or are a close family member of someone who is. You must submit your completed application and supporting documents by April 30 of any given year. No specific notification timeline is posted publicly — when you apply, ask the Canadian Hemophilia Society how and when you will hear back. All applications are reviewed by a committee of academics and lay people. Selection criteria aren't published — ask the Canadian Hemophilia Society how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask the Canadian Hemophilia Society during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with the Canadian Hemophilia Society whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.
You must be a Canadian with an inherited bleeding disorder, such as hemophilia (factor VIII or IX), von Willebrand disease, rare factor deficiencies, or platelet function disorders. You also qualify if you are a carrier, or if you contracted hepatitis C or HIV through a blood transfusion. Spouses and children of people in these groups may also apply. You are not eligible if you have already received a scholarship or bursary from the Canadian Hemophilia Society (CHS — the national organization supporting people with bleeding disorders). There are three ways to qualify: - Scholarship: based on academic merit - Bursary: based on financial need - Mature student bursary: for applicants 30 years of age and over who are returning to or beginning a course of studies at any post-secondary or vocational institution.
