About this award

You can receive $11,700 through this bursary. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. While the number of awards varies, the fund is used to offer one or more bursaries each year. This is for you if you are a First Nations, Métis, or Inuit person from Canada who is passionate about nutrition and has stayed active in your Indigenous community. You must apply by October 1. When you apply, ask the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences how and when you'll hear back — whether it is by email, the student portal, or phone. Selection criteria aren't published — ask University of Manitoba, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask University of Manitoba, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. This award is not automatically renewable, but you may apply for it and hold it more than once. Since renewal conditions aren't listed, confirm with University of Manitoba, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences what you need to maintain to be eligible for future cycles.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a First Nations, Métis, or Inuit person from Canada. You must be registered full-time (which means a minimum 60% course load, or at least 9 credit hours per term) in any year of study in the Bachelor of Science (Human Nutritional Sciences) degree program in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. You also need to have either a minimum degree grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or the minimum required entrance average for the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. Additionally, you must show that you have been involved in an Indigenous community and demonstrate financial need using the standard University of Manitoba bursary application form. If no one meets all these rules, the bursary may be offered to full-time students (minimum 60% course load) in any other undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences who meet the Indigenous identity, GPA, community involvement, and financial need criteria. If there are still no candidates, the community involvement requirement may be dropped for students in any undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences.

How to apply

  1. Read the award's official page

  3. Submit your application

Save a copy, and submit at least a day before the deadline shown above.

Tips for applying

  • Community InvolvementAvoid writing a vague list of groups you belong to. Instead, tell a specific story about how you helped or served your Indigenous community. Describe one concrete project or event where your contribution made a difference.
  • Financial NeedAvoid leaving gaps in your financial history. Instead, provide a clear and complete picture of your needs on the standard form. If you have government loans from another province, include a copy of your current official government loan assessment.
  • StrategyAvoid writing your 250-word statement at the last minute. Instead, draft it early and have a mentor or teacher review it to ensure you've clearly proven your community involvement. Focus on impact rather than just attendance.
