About this award

This award is worth upwards of $3,000. It is an award, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are an undergraduate in the RTA School of Media at Toronto Metropolitan University, you have taken one or more courses in music, journalism or a related area, and you want to make media content for local or regional multicultural communities. The award funds proposals for media content that would not otherwise be produced for broadcast and that gives real benefit to students working in music or journalism. A selection committee judges the projects. No deadline is posted on the RTA scholarships page. RTA lists this year's awards on AwardSpring, which is also where you apply, so check there for the current deadline and whether this award is offered this year. Questions go to your academic adviser.

Who qualifies

You must be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate in the RTA School of Media at Toronto Metropolitan University and have clear academic standing. You must have completed one or more courses specializing in music, journalism or a related area, and submit your project for judging by the selection committee.

Tips for applying

  • EssayAvoid describing your project only in technical terms. Instead, use your 500-word essay to explain what the project means for multicultural awareness and understanding, since that is what the essay has to cover.
  • ProjectAvoid pitching content that already airs elsewhere. Instead, propose something that would not otherwise be produced for broadcast and that serves a local or regional multicultural community.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting for someone to tell you the award is open. Instead, check AwardSpring early for this year's list of RTA awards and the deadline, and ask your academic adviser if anything is unclear.
  • RealismAvoid counting on this award alone. Instead, look through the other RTA awards on AwardSpring that match your year and program.
