About this award

Depending on your level of study, you can receive a $7,000 scholarship for Ph.D. admission or a $4,500 scholarship for the duration of an undergraduate research internship. The IID also offers a $7,000 Graduate Studies Solidarity Scholarship for master's and doctoral students with a specific financial need (deadlines October 12, 2026 and March 31, 2027) and a tuition-surcharge exemption of up to $20,000 for international graduate students (deadline February 1, 2027). These are grants, not loans, so you do not have to pay them back. This is for you if you are a high-achieving student in artificial intelligence (AI) or data science who is being supervised by a researcher at the Institute for Intelligence and Data (IID). Deadlines depend on the award: the IID Ph.D. Admission Scholarship is due October 12, 2026, and March 31, 2027; the IID Undergraduate Research Internship Scholarship is due March 31, 2027. You should email bourses@iid.ulaval.ca to confirm how and when you will be notified of the results. Winners are chosen based on the quality of your application, your academic excellence, your research aptitude, and how well your project aligns with the IID's research priorities. The number of scholarships each round depends on the funding available. Ask the IID (bourses@iid.ulaval.ca) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with the IID whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify for the Undergraduate Research Internship Scholarship, you must be enrolled full-time (or deemed full-time) in any undergraduate program at a Quebec university during the winter semester before your internship. You must have completed at least 18 credits at a Quebec university, paid those tuition fees, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 out of 4.33. You cannot have ever been enrolled in a graduate program. You must plan a full-time summer internship (35 hours/week) at Laval University in AI or data science for at least 14 to 16 consecutive weeks between May 1 and August 31. You cannot hold a full-time job during the internship or have visiting student status. You must also have a supervisor who is a regular IID member providing at least $4,500 in additional financial support. Finally, you must apply for an NSERC (the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada), CIHR (the Canadian Institutes of Health Research), or SSHRC (the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) Undergraduate Research Award, or prove why you couldn't apply. For the Ph.D. Admission Scholarship, you must be admitted as a full-time student in a relevant doctoral program at Université Laval. You must have completed your previous degree (undergraduate or graduate) at an institution other than Université Laval. You also need a supervisor who is a regular IID member providing at least $19,000 in annual financial support from grants or other external funding. Visiting students are not eligible.

Tips for applying

  • Research ProposalAvoid writing a generic project description. Instead, ensure your proposal explicitly aligns with the IID's specific research priorities. Read the institute's latest publications to match your goals with theirs.
  • SupportAvoid a brief or vague letter from your supervisor. Instead, ensure your supervisor's letter highlights your specific excellence and confirms the exact dollar amount of additional funding they are providing. Check that the amount meets the $4,500 or $19,000 minimums.
  • StrategyAvoid treating this as your primary funding source. Instead, prioritize your applications to NSERC, CIHR, or SSHRC first, as this award cannot be combined with those grants. Submit those federal applications before finalizing this one.
  • RealismAvoid applying if you do not have a confirmed IID research member as a supervisor. Instead, spend time networking with IID members to secure a supervisor who can commit to the required financial supplements before you apply.
