About this award

Manitoba Student Aid administers the province's student financial aid program in coordination with the federal Canada Student Financial Assistance Program. Manitoba participates fully in the federal program — a single online application via edu.gov.mb.ca/msa assesses you for both federal AND provincial aid in one step. URL quirk: the user-facing domain manitobastudentaid.ca redirects (302) to edu.gov.mb.ca/msa; always use the edu.gov.mb.ca URL for canonical bookmarks. A distinctive Manitoba feature is the 'Canada Student Grants Only Option' — students can opt to receive only the federal Canada Student Grants (non-repayable) without taking on the provincial loan portion. This is useful for students with documented financial need who want to avoid debt while still accessing federal grant support. Beyond the integrated loans-plus-grants application, Manitoba operates the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative (MSBI), which provincially matches private donations 1:2 (one government dollar per two private dollars) — administered at the institution level rather than centrally, so each post-secondary institution divides its allocated MSBI funds into its own scholarships, grants, and bursaries. Apply at least 6 weeks before classes start.

Who qualifies

You qualify for Manitoba Student Aid if you (1) are a Manitoba resident under provincial residency rules; (2) are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person; (3) are enrolled (or accepted for enrolment) at a designated post-secondary institution — in MB or elsewhere in Canada; (4) demonstrate financial need per the integrated assessment. Both undergraduate and graduate students may apply. Trades, college, and university programs all qualify. The Canada Student Grants Only Option requires the same eligibility as the full package; you simply opt out of the loan portion at the application step.

The Manitoba Tuition Tax Rebate is a separate post-graduation tax-credit mechanism (not a scholarship) — funding-adjacent but not part of MSA.
