No fixed dollar amount is posted — contact Metis Nation of Ontario to confirm the value for your specific award before you apply. It is not a loan, but if you withdraw from classes or do not finish your program in the period you were funded for, you must repay all or part of it. Funding is typically issued in two payments: a first payment of 50% starting mid-June for summer students or mid-August for fall students, and a second payment of 50% typically released between December and January. Once your documents are processed, payments are deposited within 4-6 weeks. Note that funding may not cover the full cost of tuition or related expenses. This is for you if you are a Metis student who is an MNO (Metis Nation of Ontario) citizen and wants to pursue higher education in Canada. The application opens March 1 and closes May 1 each year. The 2026-27 round is closed; applications reopen in March 2027, with a May 1, 2027 deadline. If you miss this date, you can apply to the PSE (Post-Secondary Education) FAP (Financial Assistance Program) waitlist, which opens on the website after May 1st. If you start in the spring or summer (May to August), you will hear about your funding decision as soon as possible in May. Those starting in the fall will be notified in June or early July. The MNO sets award amounts based on available funding, the number of applicants, your program level, your course load, and whether you have dependents or identify as a person with a disability. Payments go by direct deposit to a bank account in your name, and you get a T4A tax slip for the amount paid. Funding is not automatic from year to year: you must apply again every year and report any change to your course load right away.
You must be an MNO (Metis Nation of Ontario) citizen or have a letter of eligibility from the MNO Registry and reside in Canada. You must be attending or accepted into an accredited post-secondary program at a recognized university or college. This program supports Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral degrees (such as Ph.D, JD, and PharmD), and Post Graduate Certificate or Diploma programs. If you are in a college diploma program, these are generally supported through the MNO Employment and Training Program Application instead. Your school must be recognized by an accrediting body like Universities Canada or Colleges and Institutes Canada.
