Tips for applying

  • Community LeadershipAvoid just listing the names of organizations where you volunteered. Instead, describe a specific time your leadership made a difference in the Afro-Canadian or Canadian community. Write about one project you led from start to finish.
  • RefereesAvoid choosing references who only know you as a student in a classroom. Instead, pick people who can speak to your community involvement and leadership outside of school. Give your referees a copy of your activity list so they can write a detailed letter.
  • StrategyAvoid leaving the optional "special circumstances" section blank if you have faced challenges. Instead, use that space to explain how those hurdles shaped your leadership style. Connect your personal experience to why you want to study engineering.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that a high GPA alone will secure the award. Instead, focus heavily on proving your impact in the community. Ensure your reference letters arrive by the February 21 deadline.
