About this award

You can receive up to $60,000 over 4 years. This is broken down as $10,000 per year for your tuition and $5,000 per year for your living expenses for a maximum of 4 years. If your tuition costs less than $10,000 in a given year, you can use the remaining balance for your living expenses. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. This is for you if you are a member or citizen of a First Nation, Metis, or Inuit community who is pursuing a post-secondary education regardless of your field of study. AFOA Canada, the Indigenous-led not-for-profit that runs the program with TD, says the application portal will open in Fall 2026. The scholarship is awarded one year in advance: applications submitted in Fall 2026 are considered for funding beginning in September 2027. No closing date is posted yet; AFOA Canada's TD Scholarship e-newsletter announces application dates. A selection committee reviews applications, and you must be available for an interview with TD, in person or virtually. There are 25 scholarships each year. The tuition money is paid directly to your school each year, and the $5,000 for living expenses is paid to you each year. The program includes a mandatory four-month internship at TD each year, done in office at TD hub locations, which may be away from your home community or where you study. To keep the scholarship for all four years, you must stay enrolled and in good standing, send TD proof of enrollment and your grades each year, accept and complete each four-month TD internship with a satisfactory performance rating, and pass TD's standard background and credit check for new hires.

Who qualifies

You must be a First Nation, Metis, or Inuit person who is a member or citizen of a First Nation, Metis, or Inuit community. You must also be a permanent resident of Canada. You qualify for any field of study if you have applied for, are enrolled in, or have been accepted to a full-time minimum 2-year program with an approved post-secondary institution for the next year of study. You cannot apply if you are an employee of TD Bank Group or its subsidiaries, or if you are the child of an employee of TD Bank Group or its subsidiaries. You cannot hold this scholarship at the same time as an award of $20,000 or more over 4 years from another financial institution in Canada unless TD approves it in writing first.

Tips for applying

  • ApplicationAvoid thinking you need to write a long, daunting essay. Instead, focus on providing clear and accurate membership and enrollment details. Use the online portal, mail, or fax to submit your materials.
  • SupportAvoid submitting incomplete documents. Instead, ensure your proof of community membership and your letter of acceptance or enrollment are current. Double-check that your documents match the name on your application.
  • StrategyAvoid treating the TD internship as optional. It is a mandatory four-month internship each year, done in office at TD hub locations, so plan where you will live and how you will get there before you apply.
  • RealismAvoid assuming you will win because there are 25 awards. Instead, treat this as one part of a broader financial plan. Apply to multiple bursaries to increase your chances of covering your full costs.
