About this award

Each scholarship in the Faculty's contest has its own posted value. Most are worth $500 to $7,500; a few graduate awards are larger, such as five doctoral scholarships worth $25,000 each over three years and the $30,000 Alan B. Gold scholarship for a doctoral student. Amounts can change from year to year, and some scholarships are not given every year. Because these are scholarships, the money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are currently enrolled at the Université de Montréal's Faculté de droit, in the bachelor's, master's or doctoral program. Many scholarships are judged on your academic record; others reward community involvement or financial need. There are two contests a year, in September and in January. The autumn 2026 contest ran from September 8 to 25, 2026; the winter contest runs from January 11 to 28, 2027. You will be notified by email when the contests open, and you should check your inbox regularly. The scholarships are awarded by the Council of the Faculté de droit based on recommendations from the Scholarships Committee. Each scholarship lists its own eligibility rules, selection criteria and number of awards on the Faculty's page, so choose the ones that fit you. An incomplete or late file can be withdrawn without being reviewed. Ask Université de Montréal — Faculté de droit during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Some scholarships renew. For example, the doctoral scholarship pays $8,000, then $8,000, then $9,000 over three years, as long as you stay enrolled in the doctorate and make satisfactory progress on your thesis.

Tips for applying

  • Application FormAvoid giving generic answers to the application questions. Instead, adapt your responses to match the specific requirements of the scholarships you are targeting. Read the descriptions carefully before typing.
  • FormattingAvoid uploading files in formats other than PDF or using password protection. Instead, ensure every document is a standard PDF under 10 MB. Use a tool like Adobe Acrobat to shrink files if they are too large.
  • StrategyAvoid ignoring the naming conventions for your files. Instead, follow the exact format requested, such as 01-Notes-FirstName-LastName.pdf, and remember to remove all accents from your filenames to prevent automatic rejection.
  • RealismAvoid submitting an incomplete file or a late application. Instead, double-check that every required document is uploaded to the portal before the deadline. A single missing paper can lead to your entire application being withdrawn without review.
