About this award

You will receive $6,000, plus a minimum contribution of $1,500 from your research supervisor, totaling at least $7,500. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are an undergraduate student who wants hands-on experience through a 14-week research internship in natural sciences or engineering (NSERC), or, if you are a Black student, in health (CIHR) or the social sciences and humanities (SSHRC). The 2026-2027 competition closed on February 8, 2026, and the next competition has not been posted yet. Check the award's official page or write to brpc@esp.umontreal.ca for the next deadline. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Université de Montréal / Tri-Council (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR) how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Université de Montréal / Tri-Council (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Université de Montréal / Tri-Council (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR) whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or have refugee or protected-person status in Canada as of the institution's deadline. You must be enrolled in a bachelor's program at an eligible institution for the Winter 2026 term and have completed at least two full-time terms in your program before the internship begins. You need a cumulative average of 2nd class or better, which is a B- or 2.7/4.3 at UdeM (Université de Montréal). For the NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada — the agency that funds science and engineering) variant: you must be available for a research internship in natural sciences and engineering. Note that students in programs leading to a professional degree in health sciences are not eligible for NSERC. Indigenous and Black students are encouraged to apply and will be considered in addition to the institutional quota. For the SSH (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council — the agency that funds humanities) and CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research — the agency that funds health science) variants: you must identify as a Black student and be available for a research internship in health or social sciences. You must consent to having your self-declaration as a Black student shared with the agencies and your institution for administration. While students in professional health degree programs are not eligible for SSH, they are eligible for CIHR.
