About this award

You can receive $1,000 through one of two separate awards: the Mary Dyma Scholarship for Religious Studies or the Vera Buczynsky Scholarship for Ukrainian Language Studies. As these are scholarships, not loans, you do not have to pay this money back. This is for you if you are a member of a Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Canada and are pursuing academic excellence while furthering the Ukrainian Catholic faith, language, and culture. You must apply by May 31st. No specific notification timeline is posted publicly — when you apply, ask the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada (UCWLC — the national organization supporting Ukrainian Catholic women) how and when you will hear back. Selection criteria aren't published — ask the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

To qualify for the Mary Dyma Scholarship, you must be a lay woman and a member of a Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Canada. To qualify for the Vera Buczynsky Scholarship, you must be a lay person and a member of a Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Canada. Tips for applying

  • Reference LettersAvoid asking for a generic character reference. Instead, ensure your letters specifically highlight your involvement with the Ukrainian Catholic faith and community. Ask your priest and educator to mention your dedication to these specific studies.
  • SupportAvoid submitting references that are simply signatures. Instead, provide letters that describe your growth and contributions to your parish. Contact your church representative early to give them time to write a detailed letter.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that enrollment in any religious course is enough. Instead, double-check that your program is officially accredited and focuses on Catholic or Eastern Christian studies as required by the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada.
