About this award

You can receive a $1,200 award. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. There is only one award available. This is for you if you are an Aboriginal student who has shown leadership in sports, recreation, or physical activity while pursuing your degree. You must apply by September 29. When you apply, ask the University of Regina how and when you will hear back — whether it is through email, a portal, or a phone call. Selection criteria aren't published — ask University of Regina how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask University of Regina during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with University of Regina whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be an Aboriginal student (self-declared) enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Regina. You need a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA — the average of all your final grades) of 70%. You must be enrolled in 6 credit hours or more in a semester, though you can have less than six credit hours if you are registering in practicum or internship classes, or if you are writing or defending a thesis. You must also demonstrate leadership involvement, both previous and current, in sport, recreation, physical activity, or related activities. Award preference will be given in the following order: 1. A graduate student; 2. An entering student - undergraduate; 3. An undergraduate student.

Your school's registrar can take a week or two.

  3. Write your essay

Be specific about what you did and what changed because of it. Proofread it twice.

Tips for applying

  • LeadershipAvoid just listing the titles of the sports teams or clubs you joined. Instead, describe a specific time your leadership in recreation or physical activity helped others improve. Write about the actual impact you made.
  • TranscriptsAvoid uploading outdated records. Instead, ensure your transcripts are up to date and clearly show your registration for the current semester. Double-check that your current course load is visible.
  • StrategyAvoid forgetting your previous school's records if you are new to the university. Instead, combine your last institution's transcript and their grading key into one document with your current record. This ensures the committee can accurately calculate your 70% CGPA.
  • RealismAvoid ignoring the preference order. Instead, recognize that as an undergraduate, you are third in priority behind graduate and entering students. Focus your written statement heavily on your unique leadership experience to stand out.
