About this award

There are three awards available, each valued at $500. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. This is for you if you are a student in Journalism and Communications or Graphic Design who belongs to a designated group under the Canada Employment Equity Act (a federal law that ensures fair hiring and representation for women, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, and visible minorities). You must apply by November 1, 2026. When you apply, ask how and when you'll hear back — email, portal, or phone. Holland College lists this award's criteria on its official page (see Who qualifies). Ask Holland College how winners are picked among the students who meet them and how many usually apply, so you can judge your odds. Ask Holland College during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Holland College whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be enrolled in Journalism and Communications or Graphic Design. To qualify, you must be academically successful, show a history of community involvement, and demonstrate financial need. You must also be a member of a designated group as defined in the Canada Employment Equity Act (which identifies groups that have historically faced barriers to employment). A preference is given to those who demonstrate an interest in television journalism and/or visual communications.

This is what the award's official page said when we last checked. Rules change, so confirm on the award's official page before you apply.

  • Open to post-secondary students

Tips for applying

  • AutobiographyAvoid simply listing your life events in chronological order. Instead, tell a story that connects your personal history to your passion for media. Focus on one or two moments that prove why you belong in this field.
  • ExtracurricularsAvoid giving vague descriptions of your roles. Instead, use active verbs to describe exactly what you did and what the result was. List up to 7 activities to show the breadth of your involvement.
  • StrategyAvoid ignoring the preference for television journalism or visual communications. Instead, explicitly mention your interest in these areas within your essay to align with the funder's priorities.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that meeting the basic criteria guarantees an award. Instead, remember there are only 3 awards available, so make your community involvement and financial need very clear in your application.
