About this award

You can receive between $1,000 and $7,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. Depending on the fund and availability for the year, the money may be divided into two separate payments. This is for you if you are a student dedicated to the field of conservation. Applications must be received on or before May 31. Each successful applicant gets a letter with the decision in the fall. A selection committee of the Orville Erickson Memorial Scholarship Fund reviews the applications and picks the winners. The number of scholarships given each year isn't published. The Canadian Wildlife Foundation issues the scholarship cheques. You can use the money for living expenses, but not to buy equipment or vehicles. If you win, you must send a transcript of your marks after each semester. Each scholarship covers one regular academic year; the guidelines do not describe a renewal.

Who qualifies

You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed immigrant) who intends to work in Canada, and you must be enrolled full-time in a Canadian post-secondary institution. This award is open to both undergraduate and graduate students who are studying in the field of conservation. If you are a graduate student, you can apply even if you are not in a thesis-based program (a program where you are not required to write a regular thesis that gets examined by faculty). You must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or the equivalent.
