About this award

The CCPA/BMS Student Bursary Award (funded by BMS, the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association's professional liability insurance broker) provides two $500 awards in support of graduate student research, for student members showing academic excellence. Other student options include the Conference Student Travel Grant, the Doctoral Dissertation Award, the Masters Thesis Award, the Annual Conference Research Poster Awards, and the Student Representative Award. As these are grants, not loans, you do not have to pay this money back. This is for you if you are a graduate student member of the CCPA (Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association — the national body for counselling professionals) who is pursuing research or presenting at the annual conference. Applications open October 1, 2026, and the main deadline is January 16, 2027. No notification date is posted; awards are presented at CCPA's annual conference. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify for the CCPA/BMS Student Bursary Award, you must be a student member demonstrating academic excellence. For the Conference Student Travel Grant, you can be a student member from any CCPA region, but you must attend the conference to receive the money. For the Dr. Lynda Younghusband Counselling Award, you must be a full-time or part-time graduate student enrolled in the Master of Education (Counselling Psychology) programme at the Memorial University of Newfoundland and be attending the national CCPA conference to present a scholarly paper or poster.

Tips for applying

  • Academic ExcellenceAvoid just listing your grades. Instead, describe how your specific research contributes to the field of psychotherapy. Mention a specific project you are currently leading.
  • Conference PlanningAvoid waiting until you win the award to book your travel. Instead, map out your presentation needs and travel costs first. Create a budget sheet to show why the travel grant is necessary.
  • StrategyAvoid submitting a generic application for multiple awards. Instead, tailor your supporting documents to match the specific goal of each award, such as focusing on bilingualism for the Robert Langlois Award. Read the detailed criteria for each category before uploading files.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that being a member is enough to win. Instead, treat this as a competitive process and prepare your CV carefully. Contact the CCPA to see if they have historical data on how many students typically win each year.
