About this award

You can receive $5,000 for your studies. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are an Indigenous student who has taken on leadership roles, managed projects, or served your community through volunteer work. For the Fall term, you must apply by July 31. If you are applying for the Winter term, the deadline is December 15. No specific notification date is posted publicly — check Lakeland College's program page or call their office to confirm when you will hear back about your application. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Lakeland College how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. The money is paid in two instalments: one in the fall and one in the winter. Ask Lakeland College during your application if these funds go directly to your bank account or are applied to your tuition so you can plan your cash flow. To keep the second payment, you must achieve a GPA (Grade Point Average — the average of your final grades) of 65% or better in the fall term and stay enrolled full-time for the winter term. If you are starting in the winter, you are entitled to one instalment. Confirm with Lakeland College if you can apply for this again in future years.

Who qualifies

You must be of self-declared Indigenous ancestry, which includes Status First Nation, Non-Status First-Nation, Métis, or Inuit. You must also have been a resident of Saskatchewan during the past 12 months. You can be registered on or off-campus in any undergraduate program, and it is okay if you have already completed courses at Lakeland College or another post-secondary institution. A preference is given to students entering or continuing full-time studies in designated Business, Environmental Sciences, or Trades & Technology programs (such as Accounting Technician, Process & Power Engineering, or Wildlife & Fisheries Conservation) who have a minimum entrance high school average of 65% or a college GPA (Grade Point Average) of 65% (C/2.0 average). If funds remain after these students are awarded, students from other programs who meet all other requirements will be considered.

Tips for applying

  • SupportAvoid providing references who only know you socially. Instead, ask a teacher, elder, or community leader who can vouch for your management skills and service. Ensure they can give a specific example of your work.
  • RealismAvoid assuming the full $5,000 is guaranteed immediately. Instead, remember that the second half depends on your fall grades. Plan your budget knowing you must maintain a 65% average to get the winter payment.
