About this award

You can receive a $2,500.00 award. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a leader in your trade who has maintained strong grades while completing your apprenticeship. You must apply by January 20, 2027. When you apply, ask Lakeland College how and when you will hear back — whether it is by email, phone, or through a portal. Selection is based on your academic achievement and your ability to display leadership. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Lakeland College how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Lakeland College during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Lakeland College whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be enrolled full-time in the final year of one of these apprenticeship programs: Electrician, Heavy Equipment Technician, Steamfitter-Pipefitter, or Welder. You must be a resident of Alberta or Saskatchewan. A preference is given to award one to a female apprentice annually.

Tips for applying

  • LeadershipAvoid just listing your job titles. Instead, describe a specific time you led a team or mentored a junior apprentice on a job site. Give a concrete example of a problem you solved for your crew.
  • SupportAvoid providing a generic character reference. Instead, ask your journeyman or site supervisor to write about your technical skills and reliability. Ensure they mention your growth during your final year.
  • StrategyAvoid focusing only on your grades. Instead, balance your application by showing how your academic success translates to better work in the shop or field. Mention specific tools or techniques you have mastered.
  • RealismAvoid assuming the preference for female apprentices guarantees an award. Instead, treat this as a highly competitive scholarship. Focus on making your leadership evidence as strong as possible to stand out.
