About this award

You can receive a $1,000.00 grant, which is not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. There are 3 versions of this award available, with one award of $1,000.00 available for each specific trade program. This is for you if you are a first-year apprentice in a skilled trade who needs financial support to complete your initial training. You must apply by June 15, 2027. When you apply, ask Saskatchewan Polytechnic how and when you will hear back — whether it is through email, the portal, or by phone. Winners are chosen based on a weighted score: 60% of the decision is based on your financial need and 40% is based on your academic achievement (your final marks for Level 1). Since only one person wins per trade, ask Saskatchewan Polytechnic how many people typically apply so you can judge your odds. Ask Saskatchewan Polytechnic during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Saskatchewan Polytechnic whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be enrolled full-time at any Saskatchewan Polytechnic Campus in Level 1 of one of these three programs: the Carpenter Apprenticeship program, the Plumber Apprenticeship program, or the Construction Electrician Apprenticeship program. A preference will be given to you if you are a mature student (26 years of age and older) or a woman in a non-traditional trade.

This is what the award's official page said when we last checked. Rules change, so confirm on the award's official page before you apply.

Tips for applying

  • Academic AchievementAvoid assuming your marks are automatically sent. Instead, double-check that your Level 1 final marks are updated in the system. Contact your instructor to ensure your grades are finalized.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the last minute to fill out the General Application. Instead, complete the general form early since you are automatically considered for this award based on that submission. Submit your portal application well before June 15.
  • RealismAvoid treating this as guaranteed money. Instead, remember that only one student per trade receives this $1,000.00 award. Apply for other bursaries at the same time to increase your chances.
