About this award

Depending on which award you qualify for, you can receive a scholarship or bursary ranging from $700 to $2,000. Specifically, the Lorne Fraser Scholarship for Mental Health Promotion offers two awards worth $1,000 and $2,000; the Lorne Fraser Educational Bursary provides seven $700 bursaries; the Mental Health Fine Arts Bursary (FAB) Award offers two $1,000 bursaries; the Janice Lee Blue Wave Youth Bursary provides two $700 bursaries; and the Andre Courtemanche Green Ribbon Scholarship offers one $1,000 scholarship. As these are scholarships and bursaries, they are grants, not loans, so you do not have to pay them back. This funding is for you if you are a post-secondary student in British Columbia who lives with mental illness or addiction and wants to further your education. Applications for the 2026 awards have closed. The awards are offered each year, so check the award's official page from CMHA BC for when the next round opens. When you apply, ask how and when you'll hear back — email, portal, or phone. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Division how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Division during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed for most awards, but if you have already won one, you must wait two years before reapplying, which makes you eligible again in the third year after winning. For other requirements, confirm with Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Division whether the award is one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a post-secondary student in British Columbia who lives with mental illness or addiction. You may only apply for one of the available awards in a given year. Specific awards have additional bars: the Lorne Fraser Scholarship for Mental Health Promotion is for those entering the second, third, or fourth year of an undergraduate program, or any stage of a graduate program, with goals related to mental health promotion. The Lorne Fraser Educational Bursary requires enrollment at an accredited BC institution. The Mental Health Fine Arts Bursary (FAB) Award is for students over age 18 pursuing fine arts who have accessed therapeutic support or mental health services. The Janice Lee Blue Wave Youth Bursary is for students under age 20 who have experienced a significant mental health or substance use challenge. The Andre Courtemanche Green Ribbon Scholarship is for first or second year students in post-secondary trades programs (such as carpentry, cooking, or welding) or programs relating to fitness, nutrition and the outdoors (such as sport management or natural sciences).

Tips for applying

  • Lived ExperienceAvoid writing a generic academic essay. Instead, focus on your personal journey with mental illness or addiction and how it shapes your educational goals. Describe how your experiences relate to the specific award's theme, such as mental health promotion or fine arts.
  • SupportAvoid omitting your connection to care. For the Fine Arts award, clearly state that you have accessed therapeutic support or mental health services, as this is a requirement.
  • StrategyAvoid applying for multiple awards in the same year. Instead, pick the one that best matches your current year of study and program, as you can only apply for one and duplicate entries may result in only your first application being considered.
  • RealismAvoid expecting immediate funds if you won recently. Remember that you must wait two full years after receiving an award before you can apply again in your third year.
