About this award

You will receive $675.00. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a History major who is passionate about exploring local community history. You must apply by November 1, 2026. When you apply, ask Nipissing University how and when you will hear back — whether it is through email, the portal, or a phone call. The History Department chooses the winner based on who they deem most deserving. Ask Nipissing University how many students usually apply, so you can judge your odds. Ask Nipissing University during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Nipissing University whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a History major and have been a full-time student over the previous year at Nipissing University. You must show a strong interest in Local Community History; however, if a suitable candidate is not found, the school will consider students showing a strong interest in Military History. You must also demonstrate financial need and be a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP (the Ontario Student Assistance Program — the provincial office that manages student loans and grants).

This is what the award's official page said when we last checked. Rules change, so confirm on the award's official page before you apply.

Tips for applying

  • InterestAvoid just stating that you like history. Instead, describe a specific project or archive you explored that shows your passion for local community history. Mention a specific local landmark or historical event you studied.
  • SupportAvoid submitting a generic application. Instead, connect with your professors in the History Department to ensure your interest in local or military history is well-documented. Ask them for a brief chat about your academic focus.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the last minute to fill out your general profile. Since you are automatically considered based on your General Application, ensure every section of your profile is complete and updated.
  • RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed award. Because the History Department deems who is most deserving, treat this as a competitive supplement to your other funding sources.
