About this award

You can receive a $1,500 bursary. As a bursary, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. Three of these awards are given out yearly. This is for you if you belong to a diverse community that has been historically underrepresented in communications fields and you want to bring your unique perspective to the industry. You must apply by May 1, 2026. No notification timeline is posted publicly — when you apply, ask the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, African Canadian Services Branch how and when you will hear back. Selection criteria aren't published — ask the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, African Canadian Services Branch how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, African Canadian Services Branch during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, African Canadian Services Branch whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be a graduate of the Nova Scotia school system and be enrolled on a full-time basis in a recognized university degree program or Community College/Trade School program in Nova Scotia. Tips for applying

  • Creative EntryAvoid submitting a generic project from a previous class. Instead, create a new piece of work that specifically addresses this year's theme of "Community". Make sure your entry clearly reflects the specific communication area you are applying for.
  • StrategyAvoid ignoring the specific categories. Since there are separate awards for Images, Words, and Technology, tailor your creative entry to fit perfectly into one of those buckets. Clearly label which category you are targeting in your application.
