About this award

You get $4,500. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a Black African Nova Scotian student who has shown leadership in your community, sports, or school activities. You must apply by May 29, 2026. When you apply, ask Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, African Canadian Services Branch how and when you will hear back — whether it is by email, phone, or a portal. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, African Canadian Services Branch how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, African Canadian Services Branch during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, African Canadian Services Branch whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a Black African Nova Scotian student who successfully completed Grade 12 in the Nova Scotia school system within the current year. You must be accepted into, and will attend university in the academic year immediately following Grade 12. To qualify, you need an average of 75% or higher in five Grade 12 academic courses, which must include the compulsory course of English 12 and any four others from the Nova Scotia school system. Note that Approved Local Courses (ALC — courses recognized locally but not necessarily provincially) will not be used in this calculation, though exceptions are made for Advanced Placement (AP) Credits, IB (International Baccalaureate) Credits, and Advanced Courses. Finally, you must have demonstrated leadership through community affairs, student activities, or athletics, and you must be recommended by your high school principal, vice principal, guidance counsellor, or African Nova Scotian Student Support Worker.
