About this award

You can receive up to $100,000 over 4 years of study. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. You may get up to $40,000 in your first year, and the award is renewable for $20,000 in your second, third, and fourth years. This is for you if you are a high-achieving international student who has been admitted to the Rotman Commerce program at the Faculty of Arts and Science. You are automatically considered for this award upon admission, so there is no separate application deadline. Check your Join U of T portal for your specific award value and notification of the offer. Winners are chosen by the university on the basis of merit. Selection criteria aren't published — ask University of Toronto (Rotman Commerce) how they evaluate merit and how many students typically receive this award so you can judge your odds. The annual award value is applied directly to your student account after your full-time enrolment is confirmed in September. This means the money goes toward your tuition and fees rather than being sent as a cash payment to you. To keep the award for four consecutive academic years, you must maintain full-time registration and complete at least 4.0 credits by the end of each Fall/Winter session. While there is no specific minimum grade point average, you must remain "in good standing" as defined by the Faculty of Arts & Science. If you withdraw, or reduce your course load below 4.0 credits in first year or below full-time study in later years, you may be required to repay all or part of your award (students registered with Accessibility Services are an exception).

Who qualifies

You must be an international student (a non-Canadian requiring a study permit) admitted to the Rotman Commerce program at the Faculty of Arts and Science. Note that international students who are charged domestic fees are not eligible for this award. You must complete your secondary school program with high academic standing and satisfy all conditions of your offer of admission. To keep the award, you must be registered full-time and complete at least 4.0 credits by the end of the Fall/Winter session each year. This award is tenable with other admission awards from the University of Toronto, except for the Lester B. Pearson International Student Scholarship.

Tips for applying

  • Academic StandingAvoid assuming that a basic passing grade is enough to keep the money. Instead, aim for the high academic achievement the university expects for "good standing." Review the Faculty of Arts & Science guidelines on academic standing to ensure you stay eligible.
  • Credit TrackingAvoid forgetting that transfer credits do not count toward your 4.0 credit requirement. Instead, plan your course load carefully each semester to ensure you hit the target. Map out your credits for the Fall and Winter terms as soon as you register.
  • StrategyAvoid ignoring your Join U of T portal. Instead, check it frequently for the exact total value of your award and any specific conditions attached to your offer. Set a calendar reminder to review your portal monthly during your first year.
  • RealismAvoid counting on this money for all four years. Instead, remember that the university can withdraw the award for unsatisfactory academic performance. Check with your academic advisor during first year that you will meet all GA requirements by the end of the Summer session.
