About this award

You can receive a $1,000 award to help with your studies. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep and you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a trades student pursuing an apprenticeship training program and want to honor the legacy of a dedicated journeyman welder. You must submit your application through the portal by May 31 at 11:59 PM MT. You will likely hear back in mid-to-late July when the Yellowknife Community Foundation distributes the funding to recipients. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Yellowknife Community Foundation how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Yellowknife Community Foundation during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Yellowknife Community Foundation whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a resident of the Northwest Territories for at least twelve consecutive months. You must also be pursuing an apprenticeship training program. A preference will be given to welding apprentices.

Tips for applying

  • Trade FocusAvoid writing a generic application that only mentions you are in a trade. Instead, highlight your specific passion for your craft and any experience you have in the shop. Mention why this specific apprenticeship matters to your future career.
  • SupportAvoid submitting references that only confirm your attendance. Instead, ask a journeyman or instructor who has seen your work ethic firsthand to provide a reference. A letter from a mentor who can vouch for your skill is more effective.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the end of May to start your profile. Instead, create your account on the Yellowknife Community Foundation portal as soon as it opens on April 2. This gives you plenty of time to complete the eligibility quiz without rushing.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that being a welding apprentice guarantees the award. Instead, remember that while there is a preference for welders, any apprenticeship student in the Northwest Territories can apply. Treat the preference as a boost, not a certainty.
