About this award

You can receive a $2,500 award for your education. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a young leader in your community who has spent your time volunteering or guiding others. You must apply through the online portal between April 2 and May 31 (Mountain Time). You will hear back from the Yellowknife Community Foundation by mid-to-late July when funding is distributed to recipients. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Yellowknife Community Foundation how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Yellowknife Community Foundation during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Yellowknife Community Foundation whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be a resident of the Northwest Territories for at least twelve consecutive months. You must be pursuing post-secondary studies or trades educations in any field. You must demonstrate youth leadership and community involvement. Special consideration will be given to you if you demonstrate financial need.

Tips for applying

  • Community LeadershipAvoid just listing the titles of the groups you joined. Instead, describe a specific time your leadership helped other youth in the Northwest Territories. Give a concrete example of a project you led.
  • StrategyAvoid waiting until the end of May to start. Instead, create your profile and complete the eligibility quiz as soon as the portal opens on April 2. This ensures you have time to polish your application.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that financial need is the only factor. Instead, focus heavily on proving your community involvement, as leadership is a primary requirement for this fund.
