About this award

Financial Assistance for Nunavut Students (FANS) is the Government of Nunavut's student aid program. Nunavut does not take part in the federal Canada Student Loans program, so FANS is the government channel for Nunavut residents. FANS was rebuilt for the 2025-26 academic year. Every eligible student can get a travel grant (one return trip a year between home and school for full-time students and their dependants) and a disability grant of up to $20,000. On top of that, FANS covers tuition up to $10,000 a year ($5,000 part-time), books up to $2,500 a year ($1,250 part-time), and monthly living costs made up of a base amount and a housing amount; for a single student studying in the south that is $770 plus $2,185 a month. For Nunavut Inuit this support is a grant, along with holiday travel and living payments that start two weeks before classes and end two weeks after. For other Nunavut residents it is a remissible loan, and you can choose a smaller amount than the maximum. The old primary, secondary and needs-assessed loans, and the fixed March 1, July 15 and November 15 deadlines, were cancelled. Apply at least 8 weeks before your program's end date and reapply every academic year.

Who qualifies

You qualify for FANS if you (1) are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident; (2) have lived in Nunavut for at least 12 months before applying; and (3) are enrolled full-time or part-time in a designated post-secondary program of at least 12 weeks, at Nunavut Arctic College or another designated institution. Nunavut Inuit receive the tuition, books and living support as a grant; other residents receive it as a remissible loan.
