About this award

You can receive a bursary of up to $6,153 CAD, plus applicable taxes. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. The funds help you cover costs for the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR — the body that regulates medical lab professionals) Flexible Pathways, including account creation, Prior Learning Assessment (PLA — a process to evaluate your previous education), English Language Proficiency (ELP) testing, required bridging courses, and travel subsidies. This is for you if you are an internationally educated medical laboratory technologist (IEMLT) who wants to move your career into the public healthcare system in British Columbia. No deadline is posted publicly — before you start the application, check Health Match BC's program page or call their office to confirm when applications open and close this year. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Health Match BC how applications are approved. Ask Health Match BC during your application how the money will reach you. Note that if you are not yet in Canada, soon you will need a Social Insurance Number (SIN), a Canadian address, a phone number, and a Canadian bank account for the money to be sent via direct deposit. To keep this funding, you must sign a Return of Service (ROS) agreement. This means you agree to complete your credentialling and work for a qualifying public sector employer in BC for one year if you work more than 0.5 full-time equivalent (FTE — a measure of your weekly hours compared to a full-time load), or two years if you work 0.5 FTE or less. You must also finish any required courses within 12 months of your PLA Assessment Report date.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be an internationally educated medical laboratory technologist (IEMLT) who wants to work in BC's healthcare system. You must provide a photo passport (English-translated) and proof of a college or university diploma or degree in medical laboratory technology from a country other than Canada. You must have completed a CAMLPR PLA through the International MLT Education Category and be assigned an education plan, be eligible for Field(s)-of-Practice (FoP) exams, or have eligible CSMLS (the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science — the national certifying body) application history. You must have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) to receive payment, though you do not need one to apply. You are NOT eligible if you already work as an MLT in BC's public health sector, if you already hold Canadian certification, if you are deemed non-traditionally educated, or if you are a specialist such as a diagnostic cytology or clinical genetics technologist. Also, if you qualify for multiple allied health bursaries, you must choose only one profession to apply for.

Tips for applying

  • DocumentationAvoid sending blurred or incomplete copies of your passport. Instead, provide a clear, English-translated version that shows your photo, full legal name, date of birth, and signature. Ensure every detail is legible to prevent delays.
  • PlanningAvoid starting the registration process without checking your immigration status. Instead, confirm you have the proper authorization to enter Canada for mandatory in-person exams. Check the institutional admission requirements for any bridging courses you might need.
  • StrategyAvoid applying for multiple different health profession bursaries at once. Instead, pick the one profession that best matches your primary qualification. Contact your recruitment consultant to ensure your application isn't denied for duplicating streams.
  • RealismAvoid assuming the bursary covers all your living expenses. Instead, treat this as a targeted fund for registration, testing, and bridging courses. Budget separately for your initial relocation and housing until you secure employment with a public sector employer.
