About this award

You can receive one of three Doctoral Scholarships valued at $15,000 each. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. The funding is tenable for one academic year. This is for you if you are a doctoral researcher who has already completed your first year of study and is looking for support to continue your advanced degree. You must submit your Letter of Intent to Apply by October 1, and your complete application is due by November 1. When you apply, ask IODE Canada (National Chapter) how and when you'll hear back — whether by email, portal, or phone. A committee in the province where you earned your first degree makes the initial selections and forwards nominations to the National Chapter. The National Selection Committee, consisting of five IODE (Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire — an international organization focused on service and education) members and three professors from different universities, makes the final decisions. Ask IODE Canada (National Chapter) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with IODE Canada (National Chapter) whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Tips for applying

• Letter of IntentAvoid writing a generic request for funds. Instead, clearly outline your research goals and why your doctoral work is significant. Draft your intent letter well before the October 1 deadline.
• SupportAvoid submitting references that only speak to your grades. Instead, provide letters that highlight your character and your potential to contribute to your field. Contact your professors early to secure these letters.
• RealismAvoid assuming this is a guaranteed grant. Instead, remember that only three scholarships are awarded globally each year. Treat this as a high-reach goal and maintain other funding options.
