About this award

You can receive $1,000 for this award. As a scholarship, this money is yours to keep — there is nothing to repay. This is for you if you are a high-achieving student continuing your studies in an undergraduate or professional program in Alberta. Each school sets its own application deadline, so ask the Student Awards Office at your school for the date. You do not apply directly to the government. Instead, you submit your form to your school, and the Student Awards Office nominates students who meet the eligibility criteria. Selection is based on meeting the specific GPA and residency bars rather than a competitive ranking. Alberta Student Aid will mail a cheque directly to your address. This happens in December for fall term nominations or in March for winter term nominations. You must return to a publicly funded post-secondary school in the fall or winter terms of the next academic year. You can receive this scholarship a lifetime maximum of three times.

Who qualifies

You must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident of Canada, or a protected person (if you have refugee or protected-person status in Canada). Visa students are not eligible. You must also be an Alberta resident, which means one of these must be true: your parent or legal guardian lived in Canada for 12 consecutive months before you started school and lives in Alberta; Alberta is the last place you lived for 12 consecutive months before starting school; or your spouse or partner lived in Alberta for 12 consecutive months before you started school. You must be enrolled full-time in the second or subsequent year of an undergraduate or professional program at an eligible publicly funded post-secondary institution in Alberta. You need a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 point scale, calculated from at least 80% of a full course load in the previous fall and winter terms. A term is any study period up to 17 weeks; co-op work, internships, or exchange programs count if they are mandatory for your program. You are not eligible if you are in a one-year certificate program, if you do not return to a publicly funded post-secondary school in the fall or winter terms of the next academic year, if you already received a Louise McKinney Scholarship for the same period, or if you have already won three Jason Lang Scholarships.

• RealismAvoid relying on this as your only source of funding. Instead, look for other awards on your college or university website. Since there is a lifetime limit of three awards, plan your long-term budget accordingly.
