About this award

You can receive a total of $20,000 through this scholarship, which is paid as $4,000 per year and is renewable for 5 years. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you identify as Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, or an Indigenous Black Nova Scotian and have a strong record of leadership and community service. You must apply by April 1st. When you apply, ask St. Francis Xavier University how and when you will hear back — whether it is by email, phone, or through an application portal. Selection criteria aren't published — ask St. Francis Xavier University how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask St. Francis Xavier University during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To keep this award for the full 5 years, you will likely need to meet certain requirements. Renewal conditions aren't listed — confirm with St. Francis Xavier University what you need to maintain to ensure the funding continues.

Who qualifies

You are eligible if you meet one of the following identity criteria: 1. You are a Mi’kmaq or Wolastoqiyik candidate. Specifically, you must be identified as Mi’kmaq by the Mi’kmaq communities of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, or Prince Edward Island (PEI), or identified as Wolastoqiyik by the Wolastoqiyik communities of New Brunswick. 2. You are an African Nova Scotian candidate who identifies as an Indigenous Black Nova Scotian. This means you are Black and were either born and raised in Nova Scotia or have a substantial connection with a historically Black community in Nova Scotia. Regardless of your identity group, you must have a minimum 70% average and show that you have the StFX (St. Francis Xavier University) qualities of leadership and service to your community.

Tips for applying

  • Community LeadershipAvoid just listing the titles of the clubs you joined. Instead, tell a story about one specific time your leadership helped someone else or improved your community. Describe the actual result of your actions.
  • RealismAvoid assuming a 70% average makes you a guaranteed winner. Instead, remember that this award also heavily weights your service to others. Focus your application on proving your impact on the people around you.
