About this award

You can receive a $5,000.00 scholarship. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are an accounting major in the Faculty of Business Administration who balances high grades with a commitment to helping your community through volunteering. You must apply by January 31, 2027. When you apply, ask Lakehead University how and when you will hear back — whether it is by email, a student portal, or a phone call. Selection criteria aren't published — ask Lakehead University how winners are chosen and roughly how many applicants they typically receive so you can judge your odds. Ask Lakehead University during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. Renewal conditions aren't listed — if you're counting on this for multiple years, confirm with Lakehead University whether it's one-time or renewable and what you need to maintain.

Who qualifies

You must be an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Business Administration majoring in accounting and entering into either your 3rd or 4th year of study. You must have high academic standing. You must also be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident living in Thunder Bay or Orillia. A preference will be given to students who have demonstrated community involvement or volunteer activities, whether those took place on or off campus.

Tips for applying

  • Community InvolvementAvoid just listing the organizations where you volunteered. Instead, describe the specific impact your work had on others. List one concrete project where your leadership helped a local group.
  • SupportAvoid providing vague character references. Instead, ask a supervisor from your volunteer work to write a letter detailing your reliability and purpose-driven leadership. Ensure they mention specific examples of your dedication.
  • RealismAvoid assuming the mentorship is guaranteed for all applicants. Instead, prepare for the possibility of a formal job interview as part of the award process. Practice answering questions about your career goals in accounting.
