About this award

You can receive total support of up to $15,000. This is a scholarship, not a loan, so you do not have to pay it back. This is for you if you are a PhD student at the FLSH (Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences) who is working toward completing your degree within the expected timeframe. You must submit your request through the Capsule portal by the official end of the session (as listed in the university calendar) for the specific milestone you are claiming. No deadline is posted publicly for the overall program because each milestone has its own date — check the Université Laval — Faculté des lettres et des sciences humaines (FLSH) academic calendar to confirm the exact closing date for your current session. No decision timeline is published, so ask the faculty how and when you will be told. These are not a competition: each scholarship is tied to a step in your doctorate (for example, your thesis project or your doctoral exam), and you claim it in the session in which you are registered for that step, even if the result is not known yet. Ask Université Laval — Faculté des lettres et des sciences humaines (FLSH) during your application how the money will reach you — some awards pay students directly, others apply funds to tuition. Confirm this so you can plan your cash flow. To keep this funding, you must remain enrolled full-time (or be deemed full-time) at the time the funds are disbursed. The total you can receive across all the steps is $15,000, and each scholarship has its own time window: none can be claimed or paid after it closes.

Who qualifies

To qualify, you must be enrolled full-time (or deemed full-time), during the session the award is granted, in one of these FLSH doctoral programs: archaeology, literary studies, linguistics (including translation studies and language teaching), public communication, history, literature and performing and screen arts, ethnology and heritage, English-language literatures, ancient studies, or Spanish-language literatures. You must not have exceeded a limit of 12 registration sessions in your doctoral program. If your specific program requires a mandatory English placement test for graduation, you must have completed that test. You must also submit your application before the deadline, as no funds are paid retroactively. If you started your custom doctorate (doctorat sur mesure) before the Summer 2025 session, you are eligible; if you started it in Summer 2025 or later, you are not, and the plan set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FESP) applies to you instead.

Tips for applying

  • Application TimingAvoid waiting until you have your final results or defense date to apply. Instead, submit your request during the session you are registered for the activity, even if the result is still pending. Log into Capsule and select "Training activities in research" to start.
  • Administrative TrackingAvoid losing track of your session count. Instead, keep a detailed log of your registrations, especially if you have preparatory schooling or co-tutelage arrangements outside of Quebec. Confirm with your coordinator how your specific sessions are being counted toward the 12-session limit.
  • StrategyAvoid missing the session deadline. Instead, mark the official end of the session from the university calendar in your calendar. Remember that the university will not pay these funds retroactively if you miss the window.
  • RealismAvoid assuming that enrollment alone is enough for payment. Instead, ensure you maintain your full-time status through the date of disbursement. Check the university calendar for the "drop date without refund" to understand when payments are triggered.
